Junior Wardens comes to an end

Due to reductions in local authority funding and consequent staffing changes at Neighbourhood Management we are no longer able to run the Junior Wardens scheme as part of our work programme. It is with great regret that we have made this decision but we have no choice.

Thank you very much to all those parents/carers, schools and staff from a variety of agencies who have been involved thoughout the past few years.

A massive thanks to the Neighbourhood Management staff Andy High, Paul Zaccarini, Phil Robson and Rebecca Allen who made the Junior Warden scheme such a success ... this was recognised when the project won the Love Barrow Awards Environmental Volunteer of the Year category for 2013.

Thanks for work in the past must also go to Mark Roach and Helen Wiggan.

Most of all thanks very much to all the young people who gave their time, energy and enthusiasm to be involved in so much good work.

The Junior Wardens consist of pupils from years 5 and 6 that attend Barrow Island Community Primary School, Greengate Juniors, Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, St Georges C of E School and St James C of E Junior School. The scheme has been running since 2007 and was developed as part of the Neighbourhood Management work across Central, Hindpool and more recently Barrow Island.

The group does a mixture of environmental, educational and fun activities and the participants have the opportunity to obtain both John Muir Discovery/Explorer Awards and ASDAN Activities Awards.

The work is done in partnership with support from Cumbria Wildlife Trust – Barrow’s Wildside, Natural England, The National Trust and Marsh Street Arches and Garden Project.  We have also worked with Friends of the Lake District and South Cumbria Rivers Trust.

The participants continue to learn new skills and use these actively in the local community to benefit both residents and wildlife in the area.

“The kids love the activities and what you do with them is really appreciated.” said a pleased parent.

“That’s a nice house for a bird.” a Junior Warden after hanging a bird box.

Funding for the project is gratefully received from Barrow Borough Council and Cumbria County Council’s Children and Young Peoples Working Group.

The Junior Wardens have been runners-up in both 2011 and 2012 in the Project of the Year category and runners-up in the Environmental Volunteers of the Year (2012) in the annual Love Barrow Community Awards.
