There is something for everyone, from Walks across to Piel island, to an evening Bat Walk with Westmorland and Furness Bat Group, children’s beachcombing at Sandscale Haws and a Get on Track Walk with the Outthere project.
All walks are being led by qualified walking guides and we are delighted to be working in collaboration with SeaChange, Feet First in Furness, Cumbria County Council, Westmorland and Furness Bat Group, Cumbria Wildlife Trust and the National Trust. Walking Festival leaflets will be available from Barrow Tourist Information Centre, outlets across South Cumbria and are featured in the What’s on in South Lakeland Guide. Details of all walks are available on line at www.barrowtourism.co.uk”

Iconic Barrow event on 18 May - don't miss it!
On the 18th May, Barrow Borough Council will be holding a conference at Barrow Town Hall.
Part of the Townscape Heritage Initiative and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the day will provide an opportunity for those with a responsibility for protecting Barrow’s built heritage to discuss ways we can make decisions about the future of our heritage buildings. The day is open to all interested parties: those involved in our decision-making groups, such as the Local Strategic Partnership, Planning and Building Control, regeneration and any community groups who have an interest in the built environment of the Borough. We would also encourage people who are not attached to a particular group but who are interested in the Urban Environment to come along.
Regeneration Officer Valerie Holden said “This day is about opening our minds to new tools we can use to evaluate the space we use every day. It is for looking at future decision-making, not wringing our hands about the past. The aim is that we will go away having had some fun looking at our Borough through new eyes and with a better knowledge about how we can make our voice heard in future decisions."
The day will look at various themes: what is meaningful, quality of environment, sustainability, historic, archaeological, architectural and artistic interest and our sense of habitat. Delegates will spend time in the afternoon looking at two of Barrow’s landmarks before deciding, with the help of experts, whether or not the buildings hypothetically, should be protected. The final presentation of the day will assist delegates to understand how to make their voice heard within the planning process.
The North of England Civic Trust (NECT) is working with Barrow Borough Council to deliver the event as part of the Heritage Skills Initiative programme.
Local artist John Duffin has given permission to brand the event with his paintings. Many people will be familiar with John’s works, which feature local iconic buildings.
Speakers include: Victoria Lawson, John Barwise (Chair of Cumbria Green Business Forum), Graeme Ives (English Heritage), Graham Bell (NECT), Maddi Nicholson and Stuart Bastik of Art Gene.
The event is FREE, but places must be booked by contacting NECT on 0191 232 9279 or skills@nect.org.uk

Share a Smile
Every wondered how you could improve the place in which you live....for free...!!Well here is the answer....
A group of people, including volunteers from the community, the Community Press, local police officers, Central and Hindpool Neighbourhood Management and Barrow Crime and Disorder Reduction Parntership, have come together to share the smiles of fellow residents of Barrow. Our initial goal was to take pictures of 1,000 smiling faces of people who live and work in our town and display them on 'the Eye'. The 'Eye' is a very large projector that sits in the police station and projects an image approximately 40ft by 40ft on to the Furness House building opposite. You've probably seen it!
Now we want to capture the smile of every person, community group, group of colleagues, group of friends, and any other group you can think of! Do you fancy having your face on there?! Well now you can ... log on to our Share a Smile blog to see what's happening and keep up to date with the project as it develops. On there we ask everyone to send us a picture of themselves - smiling obviously - which we will put on to a slide show and feature on that blog.
Additionaly as many as possible will be shown on 'the Eye'. Some of the best will be chosen to feature in our local Community Press which is distributed for free to residents of local areas of Barrow. Copies of the papers can also be obtained form the Central and Hindpool Neighbourhood Management office on Dalton Road in Barrow (opposite Connexions). You can view the latest editions at http://www.nwemail.co.uk/home/community_press_2_3646.
So...get smiling...get snapping...and e-mail your photos to us: Rebecca at: rrawlings@barrowbc.gov.ukRosie at: rhillman@barrowbc.gov.uk

'Share a Smile' - Love Barrow
How does the saying go, ‘smile and the world smiles with you’? Well some agencies working in Barrow would like your help to put this to the test.
Workers from Barrow Borough Council and Cumbria Constabulary are working together on a project to record the smiling faces of local people. The ‘One Thousand Smiling Faces’ project will also involve local photographers, and father and daughter team, Steve and Rosie Hillman who have volunteered as official photographers for the scheme.
The original idea came after a local police officer, Inspector Geoff Steele, visited the US city of Chicago recently and saw a piece of public art depicting a sequence of smiling faces of Chicago residents.
Inspector Steele said “It just struck me as a really good idea and something we could easily copy in Barrow. Ours might not be as flashy as the Chicago version, but it’s worthwhile doing just the same. A smile’s a really simple way of showing how happy we are with where we live – and it’s a simple way of communicating with one another in a positive way. You never know this might encourage us all to do more of it.”
The team will be collecting photos of smiling faces over the coming weeks and it’s open to anyone who wants to take part. Collecting the smiling faces will kick off at the Market Hall entrance on Portland Walk between 10am and 2pm on Wednesday 21st of October. All people have to do is give permission for their photos to be used and then strike a pose.
The team intend to use the photographs of smiling faces on video screens, large scale projections and posters to promote the positive side of living in the town and to reinforce the Love Barrow message. One of the team behind the project, Rebecca Rawlings, said “As soon as Geoff told me about it I thought it was a great idea. The idea of giving the gift of a smile to show you Love Barrow is so simple yet really effective. We all know how lucky we are to live where we do and this is a nice way for us all to share in reminding ourselves of that.”
Supposedly it takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown so there’s no excuse for not getting involved and the team will also be visiting local schools, businesses and community groups. If you’re interested in them visiting your group or business then you can contact them through the Central and Hindpool Neighbourhood Management Team, 242/244 Dalton Rd, neighbourhoodmgt@barrowbc.gov.uk or by ringing 01229 876546.
