Arrests following drugs warrant in Barrow

At around 12.30pm today, police officers from Barrow conducted a search warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act at a property on Church Street in the town.

As a result, officers arrested a 16 year old local male and an 18 year old man from Barrow on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance. A quantity of what police suspect to be cannabis was also seized. The males are currently in police custody helping officers with their enquiries.

The search warrant was conducted as part of police efforts to combat drug-related anti-social behaviour in Barrow after local people raised concerns to police during recent Safer Stronger Community Meetings.

Campaign encourages residents to have their say on policing

Today see the announcement of the launch of a Cumbria Constabulary campaign to encourage more residents to speak out about policing issues in their neighbourhoods.
The eight week long initiative will form the second phase of the Constabulary’s confidence campaign (launched in February 2010) and aims to address the number one priority for police in Cumbria - tackling the issues that matter most to the people living in each community.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of ‘Safer, Stronger Community’ meetings and urge local residents who haven’t yet attended to go along and meet the policing team that looks after their area.

The meetings are held monthly and provide people with the opportunity to discuss policing issues in their community, see what police are doing to tackle these issues, find out about local crime figures and, crucially, vote on the issues they want local officers to tackle as a priority.

Assistant Chief Constable Jerry Graham said: “We have certain priorities that affect the whole of Cumbria, such as reducing crime and making the county’s roads safer, but the key to providing a quality policing service lies in identifying and solving those unique neighbourhood issues that have an impact on local people’s lives.

“You might be concerned about speeding outside a particular school, criminal damage in a local park or rowdy behaviour outside your house that keeps you and your neighbours awake at night. These are the issues that neighbourhood police officers want to resolve, so that we can make a real difference to the quality of life in communities across Cumbria.

“To achieve this and make a difference to your lives, we need the support of the community. We need you to attend our Safer Stronger Community meetings and speak to your neighbourhood police officers, to tell them about your issues and provide information that will help us identify those responsible.

“Last year we successfully worked alongside communities to reduce overall crime by 8.8 per cent – which meant that there were over 2700 less victims of crime in Cumbria. We want this success to continue and by getting more people involved with police through Safer Stronger Community Meetings, they will see the results for themselves and remain confident in the high standards of service we provide.”

The second arm of Cumbria Constabulary’s confidence campaign will see officers display posters and distribute postcards amongst communities to raise awareness of the Safer Stronger Community meetings taking place in each neighbourhood.

To find out when and where your local SSC meeting is taking place, contact your local neighbourhood policing team on 0845 33 00 247.

Barrow Police operation to crack down on traffic offences

Barrow Neighbourhood Policing Teams are responding to the concerns of the community by tackling speeding and anti-social motorists in a bid to make the town’s roads safer.
Police and PCSO’s are set to launch an operation to target motorists who speed through the areas of Michaelson Road, Andrew’s crossing, Island Road, Ramsden Dock Road and on Farm Street outside Bram Longstaffe School. This comes after local residents brought speeding and inconsiderate driving to police attention at Safer Stronger Community meetings earlier this month.
To address the issue, high visibility officers will be patrolling the hotspot areas and will also be in and around the areas of Athol Street, St Andrews Street to watch out for drivers who contravene road safety signs and travel the wrong way down one way streets. Officers will also be targeting anti-social motorists who park outside schools on Barrow Island and cars parked on pavements on Dundalk Street and Dunvegan Street.
The operation will run from Monday 15th February to Friday 19th February to coincide with the Constabulary’s Confidence Campaign, which aims to highlight the work going on in each neighbourhood to tackle community policing priorities.
Sergeant Paul Madden said: “Our community feels very strongly about irresponsible motorists who drive too fast or park anti-socially in the area – which is why it has been raised as a main policing priority.
“Road safety is an issue that concerns everyone and through this operation, we hope to send a strong message to all motorists who are putting people’s lives at risk. A number of ‘hotspot’ areas have been highlighted to us by the community which has helped to shape our operation. These include roads around our local schools - areas where drivers should be slowing right down, rather than speeding up.
“As well as enforcing the law by issuing speeding tickets and fixed penalty notices, we intend to illustrate the problem through posters that will be put up in local shops and businesses to urge people to think about their actions.”
To have your say on policing in Barrow Island, go to your next Safer Stronger Community meeting on Thursday 17th June at 6.30pm which is being held at Dundalk St Community Centre.

Police ask locals for their say on policing in Central

One of Barrow’s Neighbourhood Policing Team want to hear from local people at a meeting next week about what they think should be on the top of the policing agenda in their area.

In a bid to encourage residents to help shape policing priorities in their area, officers and PCSO's from the Barrow 3 team, which covers the town centre area, are holding a Safer, Stronger Community meeting on Monday 25 January so that local people get the chance to raise their concerns and highlight the issues that they want tackled.

The meeting starts at 7pm in the Central and Hindpool Neighbourhood Management Offices on Dalton Road.

Inspector David Bosson said: “Part of our policing pledge to the community is to increase our visibility and make sure we tackle the issues that matter most in each neighbourhood.

“This meeting will give us the chance to find out from local people what they see are the main issues on Barrow Central, so that we can then work to find solutions to those problems.

“Our main aim is to ensure that local people are confident that we are working hard to make their communities safer and for them to have a say in how their neighbourhood is policed.”

The Safer, Stronger Community meetings are also a great opportunity for local people to get to know their local officers, share your thoughts/ideas and directly influence what local officers do and how they work. Inspector Bosson and members of the policing team will be on hand to chat or answer any questions.

The meetings are just one of a number of opportunities that your Neighbourhood Policing Team will provide for you to have your say. Anyone who is unable to attend and would like to share their views or just speak to their local community officer can contact the community team by popping into the police station or calling 0845 33 00 247.
