Barrow police use new powers to target town centre crime and disorder

Barrow police are set to use new powers this weekend to help them tackle violence and disorder in the town centre.

For the first time this weekend (Friday 31 July -Sunday 2 August), Barrow officers will use section 27 notices under the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 to remove potentially violent and disorderly individuals from the town centre. This runs as part of ongoing Operation Regulate that was launched in 1998 to reduce night time anti-social behaviour, crime and violence and enable law abiding revellers to enjoy a safe and crime-free night out.

As part of their regular patrols in the area, officers are now able to issue section 27 notices to people aged 16 or over who are acting in an anti-social or potentially violent manner and instruct them to leave a specified area for up to 48 hours. If they choose to ignore the instruction and return within the 48-hour period, they will face arrest.

Sergeant Ian McClymont from Barrow police said: “Sadly, a minority of people in Barrow are intent on spoiling a night out for others by going one step too far and becoming aggressive or disorderly.

“In that majority of cases the catalyst for trouble is too much alcohol. People tend to lose control of their senses and start to feel that they can ‘take on the world’.

“By enforcing section 27 notices, we are able to identify those who behave anti-socially and intervene at an early stage - before serious offences are committed. We are dedicated to ensuring that Barrow remains a safe, pleasant place for people to go about their business and enjoy themselves, and hope that these new powers will make a positive difference to Barrow’s night time economy.”

Neighbourhood Wardens do a cracking job!

Neighbourhood Wardens from the Central and Hindpool Neighbourhood Management Team carried out a clean-up at the rear of Marsh Street in support of the open sessions being held at Green Heart Den community garden project over the coming weeks.
The photo above shows the site they were met with and, along with community volunteer Graham, they got stuck in and made a real difference as you can see from the photo (right).

This is a real example of how the Neighbourhood Warden team are keeping Central and Hindpool a safer, cleaner and stronger place to live. A great job done by the team - well done to all concerned.

Barrow smokers can still quit and win

Smokers in Barrow are being reminded there's still a good reason to quit the habit and get fit.
NHS Cumbria is extending its offer of free leisure centre passes to people who quit through the county’s Stop Smoking service. Those taking part will only receive the incentive if they pass a breath test.
The quit and win scheme which runs in Barrow and Carlisle was originally due to run for six months and has now been extended for at least another six months.
Fifty six people have already signed up for the scheme in Barrow and have been able to use the gym, pool and attend fitness classes at both Dalton Leisure Centre and the Barrow Park Leisure Centre. In order to receive the free passes participants have to complete a breath test which measures the carbon monoxide levels in their lungs, four weeks after their original quit date.
Smokers who kick the habit in Barrow will be able to access free sessions each week at either Barrow's Dalton Leisure Centre or the Barrow Park Leisure Centre.
As well as the free leisure centre passes, smokers will be offered the normal nicotine replacement therapy and support to help them give up from NHS Cumbria’s Stop Smoking service.
Su Sear, a public health partnership specialist at NHS Cumbria, said: "Since its launch in January this initiative has had a great response and we're pleased that we're able to extend it and help even more people to not only quit smoking, but live healthier lives too.
"I'd encourage anyone who's considered giving up or tried and failed to quit smoking before to give us a call and access the free local support which NHS Cumbria Stop Smoking Service offers. With the chance to get a free leisure pass it may also give you the opportunity to try out a new activity too."

Smokers in Barrow can take advantage of the scheme by getting in touch with the NHS Cumbria Stop Smoking Service on 01900-324222 and by talking to one of our stop smoking advisors.
