Parents
of children starting school in September are being urged to remember to apply
for free school meals, even though since last year all children in reception
and years 1 and 2 have been automatically entitled.
This
is because if eligible parents do not apply, they miss out on a free school
clothing grant provided by the county council worth £25 (or £35 for secondary
pupils) and their child’s school misses out on a £1,300 Pupil Premium payment
from government; these payments allow schools to provide extra support to
pupils to help them achieve their potential.
