Cumbria Police Authority Wants To Know What you Think About Policing

At its meeting yesterday (28 September 2009) Cumbria Police Authority reaffirmed its commitment to improving the way it communicates with people, communities, and partnership bodies in Cumbria; as it sets about seeking their views on policing.

Consulting and engaging with local communities to find out what they want their constabulary to tackle is fundamental to what any Police Authority does. Cumbria’s own has recently identified this as an area of activity that it wants to prioritise; so people here can be sure of getting the standard of service they need from their police. In addition, Government would like all public bodies, including police authorities, to engage more closely with their communities.

As part of this initiative, Cumbria Police Authority will for the first time be taking on a dedicated Community Engagement Officer. Their role will be to get out there and make contact with different communities to tell them about the Police Authority’s role. So people can be sure that the Authority’s 17 Members understand and take public expectations into account when they are developing policies, setting priorities for the Chief Constable, and monitoring Constabulary performance of them.

Ray Cole, the Chair of the Police Authority, said: “It is vitally important to us that we know what the communities of Cumbria want from their police force and they have their say in how the area is policed. So as part of this the Police Authority will be getting out and about more to get people’s views.

“Ever since the time of Sir Robert Peel, policing in this country has been built on the consent of the public. We want to build more of what we do upon conversations we have with the various communities within Cumbria; about how they would like to be policed and what priority crimes they would like to see the police tackle. It will also be a chance for us to get across to the people of Cumbria our simple message that Cumbria is a safe place to live and explain just how confident they can be about the excellent policing service that is being provided for them by Cumbria Constabulary.”
