Keep safe on the roads
Cumbria Police is urging motorcyclists to make safety their main priority when they take to the county’s roads this bank holiday weekend.
More than a third of all serious and fatal collisions in the county involve large high powered motorcycles and crash numbers can rise as much as 47 per cent from July to September countywide. So officers from Cumbria Roads Policing Unit and the Road Safety Partnership are trying to hit the message home to riders to slow down and enjoy our roads safely over the bank holiday weekend and beyond.
Inspector Richard Vernon of the South Cumbria Road Policing Unit said: "We have seen a number of collisions recently where large motorcycles have lost control on a bend and crashed without any other vehicles being involved. In the last three weeks alone three such collisions have occurred on Sundays at the A592 Kirkstone Pass. In South Cumbria motorcycle crashes make up just over half of all serious and fatal collisions so we are appealing to riders to make safety their main priority.
“In the majority of the recent crashes riders were going too fast for the road or beyond their own riding ability so I want to remind riders that you never know what is around the next bend so make sure you can stop in the distance you can see to be clear. We will be stepping up dedicated roads policing patrols on weekends over the coming weeks to challenge irresponsible riding.
"We live in an amazing part of the country and our motorcycle routes are a fantastic attraction, however it needs to be accepted that riding is still a vulnerable activity and comes with great responsibility. Our message to riders hoping to enjoy the Cumbrian roads this weekend is to do so safely and responsibly. Think of your quality of life and how easily it could be destroyed if you do not take care - not to mention the people around you who need you to arrive home safe.”
Cumbria Police are committed to working with motorcyclists to reduce collisions and our advanced motorcyclists are always willing to give advice and riding tips. They run a successful Bikesafe scheme which offers advanced motorcycle riding sessions to bikers using the county’s roads. These are free to attend and will help motorcyclists, both experienced and those just starting out, to develop their riding skills.
For more information on the courses and responsible riding contact Cumbria Roads Policing Unit on 0845 33 00 247 or visit www.cumbria.police.uk or the Bikesafe website http://www.bikesafe.co.uk/

Police remind communities to ‘lock it or lose it’ over summer
As many people prepare to jet off on their holidays over summer months, Cumbria Constabulary is reminding communities to keep their properties secure and help prevent crime.
Police officers are reminding people to ‘lock it or lose it’ to avoid having their summer spoiled by unscrupulous opportunist thieves.
Assistant Chief Constable Jerry Graham said: “Traditionally, the numbers of burglaries can rise over summer as people go on their holidays and leave their properties empty or insecure.
“Neighbourhood Policing Teams around the county take this into account as part of their regular police patrols but we are urging communities to be neighbourly and look out for one another."
“We all have a part to play in keeping crime down in our areas and if you know your neighbours are away and witness any suspicious activity around their home, please contact police immediately.
“My advice to holidaymakers would be to take a little extra care to protect your property before you go away. Taking the time to double check that your home is secure can make it much harder for offenders to commit crimes and save you the heartache of coming home to find you have been a victim of burglary or theft.
“Let your neighbours know you are going on holiday and ask them to keep an eye on your property. Avoid letting your house look deserted and cancel things like milk deliveries so that it doesn’t become obvious that no-one is home.”
Throughout summer, police patrols are also encompassing car parks at Cumbria’s popular tourist destinations to remind visitors and tourists to secure their vehicles and remove valuable items from view.
ACC Jerry Graham continues: “It is a sad fact that some of our county’s most popular beauty spots are also very popular with opportunist thieves. They specifically target vehicles in these sorts of areas as visitors can often leave valuable items such as sat navs, cameras and mobile phones on show.
“Police officer are visiting these hotspot areas and have been displaying posters to remind people to ‘lock it or lose it.’
“Pedal cyclists also need to be mindful of this safety advice. Many more cyclists take to the road in summer but don’t always consider how they will secure their bikes when they stop.
“If a bike is unattended and insecure it can be seen as an easy target by thieves. Even if you are only leaving it for a short time outside your home or a shop, or on the back of your car, make sure you lock it to a fixed point.
“I’d also advise having your cycle security marked which can be done for free by your local policing team. This is an effective deterrent and helps us to identify bikes that are found or stolen and return them to their rightful owners.”
For more information about security advice, crime prevention tips or information on how to join local Neighbourhood Watch Schemes, visit www.cumbria.police.uk or contact your local policing team on 0845 33 00 247.
Barrow's favourite shop front competition
Which is your favourite shopfront in the Barrow Borough and why?
You can vote for your favourite shopfront by telling us in no more than 50 words what you think makes it special. The shopfront which receives the most votes will be crowned as the "Borough's Favourite Shopfront". The person who best justifies their choice of shopfront will win a £50 cash prize.
The shopfront could be old or new; in need of some TLC or in a good condition. It may be your local corner shop or it could be a larger store within a town centre. You may like it because of an unusual feature, a quirky sign or something else which sets it apart from the rest. What we'd like to know is what you think is attractive or special about it.
You can choose any shopfront in the Borough, whether the shop is currently used at present or whether it is vacant. Please remember though that it is the external appearance of the shopfront which is important, rather than the shop display or the services on offer.
Follow the link here http://www.barrowbc.gov.uk/Default.aspx?page=4511 for more information, entry form and terms and conditions.
Some of the things you may wish to consider when thinking about your own favourite shopfront are:
•it's age, style or individuality
•it's scale/proportions
•the type of materials used
•the use of signs
•blinds/canopies/shutters
•the use of colour

Thought for the Week
"The power of imagination makes us infinite."
John Muir
For the second year our Junior Warden programme are working towards their John Muir Award - see here for more http://www.jmt.org/jmaward-home.asp
Why thought for the week … ?
Recently someone asked us why we post our ‘thought for the week’ every week on this blog, and that’s a good question. Ostensibly this blog is about sharing information and news about what’s going on in Barrow, and more specifically the town centre and Hindpool areas of Barrow. But we don’t just share these news stories and information about what’s on because we have to or need to, we share them because we care about the place we all live and because we believe in certain values.
It is these reasons that get to the heart of why we post a thought for the week on our blog. Regular readers of our blog will know we list interesting and fun events, news releases from public services and other generally useful information. We chose what we publish for a reason, we chose them to indicate something about our values and the kind of neighbourhood, community and town we want to live in.
The same applies to our selection of a thought of the week, we chose them as signposts to the kind of place and society we want to live in, to indicate the kind of thoughts and feelings we think are important in creating and sustaining that kind of place and society. French Renaissance writer, Michel de Montaigne said “When I quote others I do so in order to express my own ideas more clearly.” This is why and how we choose our thoughts for the week – to express our own ideas more clearly through the thoughts and words of others … we also choose them because, as a French proverb suggests “The maxims of men disclose their hearts.”
We hope you like our choices and we are always happy to hear your comments, thoughts and feelings about them – plus, if you’ve got any good ones of your own feel free to let us know.

Don’t Kick Off this Football Season
As the football season gets underway Cumbria Constabulary is urging fans to respect each other and enjoy matches safely.
Assistant Chief Constable Michelle Skeer, said: “We want everyone to enjoy the football season safely so we are asking fans to help us ensure this happens by drinking responsibly and steering clear of trouble.
“On match days we want you to enjoy the game and all the social aspects that go with it without the fear of disorder or intimidation. So we are urging all fans to behave with respect and tolerance at all times.
“Policing operations will be in place for key matches and high visibility patrols running throughout the season to deter offending and intervene early if trouble does arise. Our Community Safety Teams are working closely with licensees up and down the county to minimise the risk of football related violence and disorder in our pubs and clubs – but we need your help. It is up to each and every one of you to think about how your behaviour impacts upon others – don’t let one mindless remark or disorderly act in the heat of the moment spoil your football season, or anyone else’s.
“Drunken anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated so if you intend to have a drink in our licensed premises keep hold of your senses and behave with respect and tolerance for others. Our warning to potential troublemakers is if you cause problems in our pubs and clubs you will be caught, you will be prosecuted and in many cases you will be banned.
“Enjoy getting caught up in the excitement of the day but think of others as you make your way to and from the ground. Remember large, loud groups can be intimidating for passers by and local residents so try and stick to smaller groups or, if you can’t avoid it, remember to consider how your behaviour impacts upon others.
“We would also ask you to show consideration for others if you are travelling to and from the match using trains or buses. Disorderly behaviour on our public transport is not acceptable and we will be working with our colleagues in the British Transport Police to crack down on any undesirable behaviour.
“I am confident that by working together and taking responsibility for our behaviour we can all help make this football season safe and enjoyable for all.”
