The number of children living in poverty in Barrow is 3,340 – this means around one third of all children living in poverty in Barrow live in Central or Hindpool wards

The percentage of children living in poverty in Barrow as a whole is 21.7%.

The percentage of children living in poverty in Cumbria as a whole is 14.9%

What can you do to help address child poverty in Central and Hindpool?

The Neighbourhood Management team in Barrow are leading on a pilot project to address issues of child poverty across the Central and Hindpool wards of Barrow.

We currently have a steering group made up of representatives of various agencies and we’ve done some work to promote existing advice and support services which can help families who are suffering during these difficult times.

Now we want you to help too! What can your organisation do to help address child poverty issues in the Central and Hindpool wards?

We are offering up to £2,000, as a one-off grant, for any project your organisation can deliver which will address issues of child poverty across the target area. We’re interested in hearing from anyone who thinks they can make a difference … all we need from you is some basic information about your organisation, the kind of initiative you would run, what the measureable outcomes would be and a breakdown of your costs. You must be able to start your project straight away and we would need an interim report on progress against outcomes by 28 February 2013.

Vulcan and Brathay Tenants and Residents Association held a successful Jubilee party at the weekend. The event was well attended and everyone had a great time despite some unpredicatable weather.

We here at Neighbourhood Management were happy to support the event. 

Neighbourhood Wardens clean-up rear Church Street playground

Neighbourhood Wardens today cleaned-up the rear of the Church Street playground where some people had chosen to dump assorted items such as a small TV, wood, shrub/tree cuttings etc.

The photo below shows Neighbourhood Wardens Andy and Paul next to the pile of rubbish collected after spending an hour around the site.

The Wardens also littered picked around the play park and basketball court area.

Neighbourhood Wardens clean-up in Central Barrow

Neighbourhood Wardens, from the Neighbourhood Management team, have been clearing rubbish left in the street by a local resident. It should go without saying that no rubbish should be left out, in front or back streets, except in the appropriate containers such as wheelie bins, recycling bags and boxes etc.

Where the source of the rubbish can be proven Barrow Borough Council will issue fixed penalty notices against people leaving rubbish around the streets.

Please use your common sense, use your bin and recycling containers and remember it is an offence to present waste for collection before 12 midday on the day before collection or leave bins out past midnight on the day of collection.  Failure to adhere to these instructions could result in a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice. Photos show Sutherland St corner/rear Greengate St today - rubbish bags dumped in the street and then becoming split open and spreading around nearby grass landscaping.



Following intervention from the Neighbourhood Warden team the the bags have been removed and the site cleaned (see photos below). The Wardens will be providing a local address with information about manging their waste and the problem will be logged on the council's database for reference should future problems re-occur.

You and Me and Afternoon Tea sessions in Barrow

This month a series of health and advice sessions are running in Barrow to support people to be independent and get help when they need it.

In January three events will be held at the Ramsden Street United Reformed Church called 'You and Me and Afternoon Tea'.

These events will take place on Wednesdays on January 11th, 18th, 25th from 2 to 4 pm.

Each afternoon will have a range of different activities such as a slide show, quiz, chair-based exercises and short information talks by Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, Cumbria Police and Furness Carers. There will also be afternoon tea.

Everyone is welcome and it is completely free for anyone who wants to come along and enjoy an afternoon out to talk and meet new people.

The You and Me and Afternoon Tea sessions are being organised by a group from local Methodist and United Reformed Churches, NHS Cumbria, Furness Carers, Barrow Borough Council and Age Concern.

Final phase of demoliton under way in Central Barrow

The final phase of the planned demolition around Arthur, Sutherland and Marsh Street is now underway. Contractors, Marsh Plant Hire, begun full scale demoliton of properties on Marsh Street yesterday (5th September 2011).

Over recent months demolition work has been completed on one block of Sutherland Street and both blocks of Arthur Street. This work has been accompanied by housing improvement schemes to the remaining blocks on Sutherland Street and Marsh Street which has included new rooves, windows, doors, rear walls, front rendering etc.

This current phase of demolition is expected to be completed within the next month.  A few properties will remain for a time until the residents are rehoused. Once these are cleared this will leave a large, cleared site suitable for any future developments.

Shopping maps for Barrow and Dalton online now!

Shopping maps for Barrow-in-Furness and Dalton-in-Furness are now being featured on Barrow Borough Council’s websites, www.barrowbc.gov.uk and www.barrowtourism.co.uk

There is a link to Shopping on the front page of both sites which takes the user direct to the maps.

The maps show individual businesses and categorise them, so that visitors to the website can see if a shop is a department store, specialist shop etc. Businesses are allocated one of 15 categories.

The maps are a simplified version of the Council’s Open Source Web Mapping system, and users can zoom in on streets to obtain different levels of information and hover over areas to view the shop details. The full mapping system can be found at www.barrowbc.gov.uk/mapping
