The day will look at connections between communities in Cumbria and will include updates from:

• Professor Tony Chapman (St. Chads College, Durham) who has recently completed detailed research on the third sector in Cumbria, looking at size and composition, employment, volunteers, income, partnerships and the future
• the Cumbria Third Sector Network, who connect and represent the voluntary and community organisations in Cumbria at a more strategic level
• the Cumbria Compact, which outlines the relationship between the public sector and the third sector in Cumbria and details a common set of principles and commitments, which encourage a way of working that can help deliver real outcomes and improvements for people and communities
• the New Economics Foundation, the UK’s leading think tank promoting social, economic and environmental justice. They will look at Coproduction – a way of working whereby decision makers, people who use services, and service providers work together to create a service which works for them all. The approach is built on the principle that those who use a service are best placed to help design it – and Commissioning for Outcomes
• the Department for Communities and Local Government, discussing the devolution of power away from national government. They will be looking particularly at how powers can be devolved down to neighbourhoods and local community groups.

CVS - Local Funding Forum 12 June

Do you have a New Year’s resolution to take up a new challenge, but don’t know where to start?

New Year can bring new beginnings, and it may be you want to get fit, change your lifestyle, or learn something new but don’t know where to start, or how to find information, or need someone to go along with you to offer encouragement.

The Inspiring Barrow project can provide just the sort help, advice and support you need to get you started. We have recruited Community Learning Champions who are local volunteers and can help you find the right learning opportunities for you.

They have all been in the same situation and know how difficult it can be to take that first step. They can research suitable courses for you, find out about the times and venues and even come along to the first session with you to provide some initial support if required.

There are many exciting learning opportunities available in Barrow but as Sandra Brown, Community Action Learning Forum (CLAF) says “Sometimes we just need some-one to direct us to what is available and help us through the initial process to get us going. If you are keen to take up something new but don’t know where to start, why not come along for a coffee and chat to find out how we can help.”

The next drop-in session is at Barrow Island Community Development Centre, Island Road on Wednesday 26th February 2014 9am-11am, children welcome.

“We would also like to meet people that have already taken that first step and benefited from learning new skills, activities and lifestyles and feel they can use their experience and knowledge to help others by becoming a Learning Champion” said Sandra.

Community Learning Champions receive full support from the CLAF co-ordinator; undertake accredited training and receive travel expenses. The next training course starts in March we would love to hear from anyone interested in joining us.

‘Inspiring Barrow’ Project Vacancies - Co-ordinators Wanted!

Following the award of Reaching Communities Lottery funding, the Inspiring Barrow Steering Group is seeking two freelance co-ordinators to oversee the projects’ activity programmes.

‘Inspiring Barrow’ follows a very successful year-long project pilot in 2010-11 and provides a range of community learning programmes and initiatives to create and promote lifelong learning opportunities, inspire children, young people and adults to live more healthily, improve their chances of employment and raise their aspirations and the quality of their lives.

The project is a collaboration between a number of partner organisations, principally:

Cumbria CVS, Neighbourhood Management, Cumbria County Council’s Children’s Service, Inspira, Lancaster University, NHS Cumbria Public Health Improvement Team and the Primary Schools Collaborative.

A wide range of activities are planned during the three-year project including:

-  Accredited learning programmes for creative activities and sports activities

-  Personal development programmes to raise people’s aspirations, confidence and

wellbeing

-  Training programmes, learning activities and events

-  Health and wellbeing activities and programmes

-  Developing informal learning and communication networks.

People interested in applying for the posts of a Community Learning Action Forum Co-ordinator (3 days work a month) and an Inspiring Barrow Project Co-ordinator (2.5 days work a week) should contact Cumbria CVS for an application pack. Our funding fairs are highly valued and this year’s South Cumbria event is at The Forum, Duke Street, Barrow, 9.15am - 3.45pm.

It’s the opportunity to meet key funders to learn about and discuss funding opportunities; attend workshops for fundraising tips and best practice and hear speakers on a range of funding, income generating and organisation sustainability topics.

The event this year has a Quality theme, with topics ranging from the benefit of adopting Quality standards; managing financial risk; to writing quality funding applications.

We’re delighted that Anastasia Mihailidou from Charities Evaluation Service (CES), the UK's leading provider of support and advice on quality and evaluation systems for the voluntary sector, will be providing an essential introduction to and overview of this topic.

Other highly experienced professionals will be running a series of workshops, presentations and other training-related sessions to help groups maximise their chances of securing funding and remaining sustainable.

Local, regional and national funders will be on hand to talk to at the Marketplace sessions: including the Big Lottery Fund, Lloyds TSB Foundation and Heritage Lottery Fund, alongside local funders and support organisations including Cumbria CVS to give practical advice and information about grants and other forms of income.

Wednesday 16 May 2012. This event is taking place at The Forum, Duke Street, Barrow in Furness, Cumbria, LA14 1HH, from 10.30am – 3pm.

This fun occasion aims to celebrate learning and tempt people in Barrow to experience the quality and variety of learning on offer in the town.

The event will help visitors to gain greater confidence in engaging with learning activities and become part of a growing ‘learning community’.

Learning Providers will have an opportunity to showcase what they can offer and provide taster sessions for new learners.

There will be no charge to the general public on the day.

Cumbria CVS Barrow - latest news!

Cumbria CVS are moving to Lesser Kings Hall, Hartington Street, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. LA14 5SR

CVS are relocating to new premises, their planned moved is for week commencing Monday 2nd August 2010. During this week the office will be closed to the public and they will re-open at the new premises Monday 9th August 2010. Due to this move no Barrow E-Bulletin will be sent out on 05/08/10.

Community Champions

NHS Cumbria, Cumbria CVS and Cumbria Local Involvement Network are working together to support and train Community Champion Volunteers in Cumbria.

What are Community Champions?

They are local people who care about the health of their community and of those around them. They are volunteers who work a few hours a week either on a one-to-one basis with individuals or with groups who want to improve their health – educating, encouraging, supporting and mentoring.

We are holding an information session on 27 April 2010 for you to find out more about Community Champions.

When & Where? Tuesday 27th April at Hindpool Community Centre, Nelson St, Barrow

The session begins at 10 am and ends with lunch at 12:30 pm
