The number of children living in poverty in Barrow is 3,340 – this means around one third of all children living in poverty in Barrow live in Central or Hindpool wards

The percentage of children living in poverty in Barrow as a whole is 21.7%.

The percentage of children living in poverty in Cumbria as a whole is 14.9%

What can you do to help address child poverty in Central and Hindpool?

The Neighbourhood Management team in Barrow are leading on a pilot project to address issues of child poverty across the Central and Hindpool wards of Barrow.

We currently have a steering group made up of representatives of various agencies and we’ve done some work to promote existing advice and support services which can help families who are suffering during these difficult times.

Now we want you to help too! What can your organisation do to help address child poverty issues in the Central and Hindpool wards?

We are offering up to £2,000, as a one-off grant, for any project your organisation can deliver which will address issues of child poverty across the target area. We’re interested in hearing from anyone who thinks they can make a difference … all we need from you is some basic information about your organisation, the kind of initiative you would run, what the measureable outcomes would be and a breakdown of your costs. You must be able to start your project straight away and we would need an interim report on progress against outcomes by 28 February 2013.

New community garden unveiled

Barrow's newest community garden was officially opened at the weekend. The 'Old Bakery Gardens' was opened by the Leader of Barrow Borough Council, Councillor Dave Pidduck, alongside local residents group Chair Jen Cox. Around 30 people including local residents and representatives from a number of agencies looked on as the pair pulled the ribbon to formally open the site.

The garden, situated at the corner of Thwaite and Buccleuch Street in central Barrow, has been under construction for the last six months and has been designed and developed by Richard Hollinshead and Jo Ray from Grit and Pearl Art Consultants (http://www.gritandpearl.co.uk/).

The site, owned by Barrow Borough Council, was levelled following the demolition of the Old Bakery building several years ago and is earmarked for housing development. In the meantime the council has agreed to convert the site into its new form as a community garden. The previous demolition was part of Barrow Council's ongoing Housing Renewal programme which has also seen demolition and refurbishment of homes around the Arthur, Marsh and Sutherland Street areas of the town.

The community garden consists of a landscaped area, made up of grassed mounds covered in wildflowers, assorted formal and informal seating and other decorative features including flower patterns painted onto the tarmac surface.

One of the other succesful ingredients of the garden is a separate grow your own plot. This area contains 12 individual planters, designed for community use, and nearly all have already been taken up by interested local residents. One of the planters has also been allocated to the children of the nearby Ramsden Infants School on Thwaite Street.

Steve Robson, Neighbourhood Manager for Barrow Borough Council said "We're really pleased, it looks great and the local residents group are happy with the finished product. The great thing about this is the amount of different organisations and businesses that have supported this project in so many different ways, it's been a real pulling together and demonstrates yet again the excellent partnership working that happens around Barrow on a regular basis."

"From now on the TASC residents group will look after the site and we'll work with them on various projects. As well as the visual improvement, to what was a derelict site, we've also created more space for local people to grow their own fruit and vegetables. We're particularly keen to promote this kind of positive activity which in itself promotes good health and well being."

Following the official opening of the garden over 70 people called into the community day and afternoon tea held at nearby Ramsden Infants School. This event saw £105.00 raised for the TASC group through the raffle, tombola, face painting and garden bring and buy stall.

Walk to Remember for St Mary's Hospice

'Walk to Remember' registration days take place on Tuesday 5th April 9-4pm and Wednesday 4th May 9-4pm at Asda, Walney Road, Barrow-in-Furness.

Entries are now being taken for the 5th annual St Mary’s Hospice moonlight walk. Pop along to Asda with your registration fee of £10 to take part.

The 'Walk to Remember' takes place Friday 20th May 2011 10pm from Asda, Walney Road, Barrow-in-Furness. With everyone wearing pink flashing hats, pink t-shirts and bunny ears, Barrow will be transformed by a ray of flashing lights, feathers and sequins as walkers unite to support St Mary’s and embark upon this awe- inspiring night time challenge. Neighbourhood Wardens clean-up at Holker Street

The former Kwik Save site on Holker Street was covered in litter through irresponsible people depositing  their food wrappers, drinks containers and other litter all throughout the bushes surrounding the site. The photos here show the mess the site was in before the clean-up.

Central and Hindpool Neighbourhood Wardens have carried out a litter pick and general clean-up around the site to maintain the look of the site and wider area.

 Neighbourhood Wardens spent an hour on the site and made a significant impression on the mess.

Steve Robson, Neighbourhood Manager, said "We're cleaning the site because we care about how the neighbourhood looks. If we were to leave the site collecting litter and rubbish for a long time, it just gets worse and worse and tends to spread to the nearby areas.

By keeping on top of it we hope to show people that someone cares about how the neighbourhood looks and hopefully they'll think twice before throwing their litter and rubbish on there as they pass."

Senior Neighbourhood Warden, Andy High, said "We regularly carry out small scale clean-ups and litter picks around the town centre and Hindpool area - from Channelside to the Vulcan and lots of areas inbetween.

On the day the team collected 13 bags of rubbish and several larger itesm such as traffic cones, recycling boxes and an old child's scooter.

Andy High summed up the problem saying, "It's terrible how soon an area can need clearing up again after we've carried out a clean-up and what would really help us is if more people took a responsible attitude to littering in the first place."

Thursday 10 February 2011 from 10–12 noon at St. Marks Church Hall, Rawlinson Street, Barrow. Trading Standards will be giving advice on door stop crime, rogue traders and bogus callers. A Health Trainer will give free advice and support to anyone who is unemployed on health and lifestyle.
