Council plans to retain old advertising sign

Barrow Borough Council are carrying out the latest phase of their housing renewal work in the Rawlinson St area of Barrow.

The row of terraced properties nearest the Abbey Rd end of Rawlinson St are set to receive a facelift as part of the Council's scheme.

At the corner of Whitehead St and Rawlinson St the large gable end currently contains a faded old sign-writing advert on the wall for 'Capstan Navy Cut Cigarettes' and 'Wills's Bulwark' (see photo above).

The council, having liaised with the property owner, have decided to retain the sign once the refurbishment work has taken place, plans are to render the whole gable end and re-write the sign in its original state on the newly rendered gable end.

This work will fit in with other recent efforts to preserve these kind of signs around the same area of town, such as the sign-writing recently restored on Cooke's Building in Abbey Rd and a similar restoration on the property at the corner of Rawlinson St/Buccleuch St.
